We here at Communardo are proud to publish our newest product User Profiles for JIRA. You may already be familiar with our existing Confluence product User Profile Plugin. It extends Confluence’s user and hover profiles with configurable profile elements, and much more. With UPJ – our internal handle for User Profiles for JIRA – this is now also available for JIRA. As one of UPJ’s developers, I want to showcase its features with this blogpost.

Meaningful Hover Profiles
One of the main features of User Profiles for JIRA is the extension of the hover profile, the popup balloon which appears when moving the mouse over a user name. JIRA displays the user’s avatar, name, email, and timezone there. This is often not enough, e.g. when trying to find the right contact person or expert. With User Profiles for JIRA, it is possible to display some or all of the configured profile elements in the hover profile. That way, the relevant information about a user is available right where it is needed: when hovering over its name.
Configure User Profile Elements
After installing User Profiles for JIRA, the administration contains a new section in the user management called “User Profile Settings”. There, administrators can create, manage and reorder new profile elements, divided in personal and company-related elements. These are the settings for each profile element:
- Its name
- An optional helptext
- Its type. Available are text, user and select types.
- An optional LDAP mapping
- And if the element should be displayed on the hover profile
The LDAP mapping is required, if data from the connected directories should be synchronized to an element. This also applies to the special element “User Profile Picture”, which will synchronize the users’ avatars in JIRA with pictures from the directories. The LDAP synchronization is an important feature: It ensures that profile information stays up-to-date and in sync with data in other applications (e.g. in Confluence).
Edit your User Profile
Users can edit their profile elements depending on the configuration of the profile fields. For text fields, they can enter any text they want. For user fields, they can select another user via auto-complete. And for select fields, they can select one or more pre-defined options. For profile elements with enabled LDAP synchronization, users don’t have to enter any data themselves. Those elements will be filled with data from external directories automatically.
UPJ is compatible with JIRA 6.2+. To find out more about User Profiles for JIRA head over to its listing in Atlassian’s Marketplace.
Finally, I also want to share some ideas for future versions of User Profiles for JIRA.
We are thinking about adding OrgCharts to JIRA, similar to how User Profile Plugin does for Confluence.
We want to synchronize UPJ’s configuration with User Profile Plugin’s configuration in Confluence.
More element types and a gadget for the dashboard are also on our roadmap.
If you have any questions or suggestions, we’d be happy to hear from you! Please take a look at UPJ’s Support Portal or simply send as an email.
